Does anyone think it is right to not immediately tell an only son his father has died?

I'm not talking about a child son, or someone who may commit suicide upon hearing the news. I'm 45 yo. and my father's only child. When my father died my stepmother never notified me. After repeated calls to my father around his birthday 3 weeks later his goldigger wife told me. I'm not some psych patient or someone who would do something strange when they here the news and my step mother knew that. I just want to know would any of you even do this to your worst enemy? Real answers only please, this isn't a joke or a hypothetical situation. But if you will answer yes please explain why. Thank you
