Help with Dishwasher?

I'm not sure if its because of the hard water but no matter what we do, our dishwasher leaves our dishes, pots, pans, utensils and silverware with a white residue. Maybe its the palmolive dishwashing liquid we are using or that we have black plates and black cooking utensils. its really gross and i'm tired of it. what can i do? Our dishwasher has several options and i have tried it with and without hot start, and with and without autodry. Does anyone have other suggestions? Thank you
